One of the more pleasant surprises from the Horizontal Shooter with Boss Competition is Prototype. In the “final test phase” the game is undergoing some adjustments to difficulty level, but other than minor tweaks it’s ready to go.

I’m a big fan of R-Type and Pulstar so it’s no wonder I like Prototype. You’ve got various shot-types, missiles, a beam that you charge and a “force” type object. In an interesting twist you can control which direction the force faces, rotating it around your ship. The level design and the feel of the game are great. You have to learn the level, just as in R-Type, if you get killed there are several start points to continue at… without any of the power-ups you’ve obtained of course.

For a contest entry, Prototype surprises and does a lot of the little things right. There’s a highscore table and end-of-game music that is just melancholy enough to make you realize “you were humanity’s last hope”. I’d really like to see this game continue in development with more levels, it’s really well done.

This is great! Clone of R-type which is good as original game!
I found one bug only – add one type of weapon yet 🙂

It is good, isn’t it? 🙂 Check out Shmup-dev and the latest Autofire competition, X-Out is doing another game, ProtoType mkII. There’s a demo posted, looks really good, like R-Type Delta.

    good? no… its great!!!!!!!!!!
but two small bugs – on the instructions – pages shift too fast – switch pages with any key will be better… and second when you see game over and press escape you leave game… is any way switch back to menu and play again?

Not sure about how to play again without leaving the game… you might try asking X-Out, you can probably post the question over at Shmup-Dev. And yes, it’s “great” 🙂

[…] X-Out recently announced GraviTron, a replacement entry in the AutoFire 2007 Shooter Competition. X-Out was the author of ProtoType, mentioned here, and winner of the first competition at Shmup-Dev. GravitTron replaces the planned ProtoType mkII, which I still hope to eventually see. GraviTron is looking great, more when an official version is released. […]

[…] I won’t say too much about ProtoType II until there’s an official release, but I will encourage everyone to play the demo now available. X-Out was kind enough to create a build that would run on my laptop and as expected the game is shaping up very nicely. As a fan of R-Type I have a huge grin on my face playing this.
