Titanion

Posted in everything, games, must have, shmups at 9:20 pm by the2bears

I have a feeling it’s going to be a good Thanksgiving holiday. Kenta Cho has released a new game, Titanion. It’s an understatement to say I’m a huge fan, and first impressions of the game are good.

Titanion is a little like Galaga, with the enemies quickly flying around and into the screen in different waves. It has a nice twist, though. In Galaga your own ship could be captured, and if you got it back you added to your firepower. In Titanion you are the one with the capture beam, and captured ships add to your firepower (a little like in Tumiki Fighters).

Graphics and sound are classic ABA, meaning abstract and very stylish. Stop reading and get the game, it’s another great offering.

this actually seems most similiar to gaplus, aka galaga 3, in which you get a capture beam that can be used to recruit enemy ships.

Aye, this is ace fun so far. Been playing it inbetween keeping an eye on baby for the past couple of hours.

Starting to get the hang of it now though, a pityful 350,000 so far – can do better. Must do better…will do better…

Hah! Great to come back from thanks giving to find this!

The silhouette/detail line rendering is sorta familiar ;) . I can even see he’s got some normal calculations wrong, and I know exactly why, since I fixed it in my code.

But I ain’t bitter. I could never be, at Kenta Cho. I gave him his first proper western interview! Fanboy 4 eva.

I may just be guessing here, but I don’t think it’s wrong if it’s intentional. (Seriously, I couldn’t imagine this game with the colors staying inside the lines.)

I was going to say… it looks cool, so I’m not surprised he didn’t try to fix it. “Coloring in outside the lines” kinda style. It’s neat.

[...] Kenta Cho already has an update for the recently released Titanion. Added is a modern mode, in which your capture beam becomes a provocation beam. This new beam causes the enemies to fire more bullets (bullet hell) allowing you to gain more points through your bullet multiplier. Original post here. [...]

[...] The most exciting game released in November was Kenta Cho’s must have Titanion. I likened it to Galaga, but dessgeega kindly corrected me and commented that it’s more like Galaga 3 (Gaplus). For some reason I never saw that one in the arcades, but dessgeega is correct. [...]

You never saw it in the arcades because it was never in the arcades outside of Japan, and it wasn’t even very popular there. It *is* on the Namco Museum Volume 2 for the PSX, however. The original name was Gaplus(short for Galaga Plus) and was retconned to Galaga 3(even though there was never a Galaga 2). Here’s an article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaplus
