Space Renegade 2
United Minds Games have announced the release of a demo for Space Renegade 2. My personal opinion is that this would be better described as a “beta” release, but I’ll get to that in a moment.
First though, there are a lot of positives in Space Renegade 2, a shooter in the Galaxian style. The graphics are very well done, from the player’s ship designs (you have a choice of two) to the enemies. A nice addition are the cut-scenes throughout, detailing the background story. The transitions from level to level work well, and the sound and background music add to the game without distracting from it. Overall the game is very professionally packaged.
So why do I think it should be dubbed a “beta” release? Unfortunately there are more than a few gameplay issues that normally come out in the game testing stage. The good news is that these can all be easily fixed.
The hit box for your ship is too large. The first boss has an attack that shoots out three shots. It should be possible to dodge in between the shots, but it’s not. This sensitivity is frustrating through-out the game.
Another point that I think needs fixing is your ship’s starting strength. You start off with only one shot allowed on screen at any one time. I would recommend giving the user a bit of money to upgrade at least something before the game begins. The first boss became a long, drawn-out affair due to the ship’s limited firepower.
There are a few other, little things, but like I said they’re easily fixed. The game promises to be quite fun, especially with the story scenes adding a rare aspect to the game.
