Shoot 1UP

Shoot 1UP is going to be available very soon on the XBox 360 Indie Game Channel, and about $1 it’s a steal. I was lucky to get a late beta of the PC version from Mommy’s Best Games and I’ve been having a lot of fun with it.

The basic game mechanic is options, and lots of them. Each option is a 1UP, and you can collect a hoard of them quite quickly. They are destructible, though, and can be difficult to maneuver through bullets. Left trigger collapses the formation, while the right trigger spreads them out again. Collapse to dodge, but points and extra firepower are available when you risk spreading out. There’s a further mechanic involving a shield that charges while you’re not shooting, exploding with some force, but I haven’t quite mastered its use yet.

I’m very impressed with the game, and for the amount of level and enemy variety you get for such a low price. Mommy’s Best Games have implemented a fairly novel approach to the option mechanic, but kept the basic risk and reward systems ideally simple. Plus, giant fembots!

Be sure to check out 8 Bit Horse as well, their new site for information on 2D games.

Yeah, sell a PC version for those of us who bought a WII instead 🙂 !
I’d buy it just for the third image from the top…

But… is every single of your ships vulnerable, or just a core ship?

All ships are vulnerable, there is no “core” ship.

Once the last ship is dead, the game is over, but when you get low on ships, 1UPs are fairly plentiful as long as you are making kills (such as smaller enemies). Boss fights get pretty hairy though when you get low.

I’m intrigued by the screenshots – the third in particular. I’ll be waiting for some busybody to whinge about “mature” content on XBLIG…
