I won’t say too much about ProtoType II until there’s an official release, but I will encourage everyone to play the demo now available. X-Out was kind enough to create a build that would run on my laptop and as expected the game is shaping up very nicely. As a fan of R-Type I have a huge grin on my face playing this. See also Prototype.
Slowly but surely The Iron Council progresses. There’s now an armament, a turret, that can be placed on a train car, via an XML file. Many more to come, but for now it’s still rather boring. At least the video is at 60 fps or thereabouts. Looks much better via Java Webstart or a Windows download.
Cas and Puppy Games continue to impress with their signature retro style of games. Treasure Tomb is shaping up very nicely, and is about “another 3 months” away from release. I find the targeting system is quite impressive. You can find a link in the development diary to play the latest builds, via Java Webstart.
With the odd combination of the space-bar for shooting and ‘M’ for a targetting attack, the game does suffer a bit from its Flash development environment. I feel the game is a little sluggish and unresponsive. It may be that Flash handles the keyboard input with an event model, because it feels like the game gets around to reacting to the keyboard when it wants to and not when I want it to.
The game does show quite a bit of promise, though. The graphics are very nice, and the overall presentation is very professional. You’ll find yourself having to memorize the level(s) quite a bit though. Enemies tend to appear on all sides, especially from the bottom, with no warning.
All in all, it’s nice to see a new game studio start out with a shooter
