I’m taking a holiday, flying over to Taipei this evening. For the first time in a few years I’m leaving my laptop behind. In the meantime I highly recommend you check out the games at Independent Gaming and TIGSource. Apparently there are other genres of games, who’d have thought? Also, check in at Retro Remakes, there’s always great games being released (IO anyone?). Don’t forget to see what Petri’s new game will be over at Kloonigames (could it be first on the list here?).
Cactus, who really consists of a consortium of 100s of developers, has already announced another mini-game. Protoganda switches styles again, and is inpsired by 8mm film quality and Soviet progaganda Also, it’s only for those who’ve preordered Akuchizoku.
Currently it’s only a test of the helicopter’s movement (arrow keys) and firing (‘Z‘ for bullets and ‘X‘ for missiles). Under Defeat allows you to select between turning towards or away from the direction you move when going left and right. I imagine offering this choice as well, though currently you will turn away. While shooting your ship’s yaw is locked.
I also see offering a choice of options, either they’ll shoot bullets or missiles, but not both. Maybe even a choice of between the helicopter and an airplane. That would set up a classic shmup trade-off: more firepower from the plane but without the ability to adjust the angle of attack. What’s cool is the options balance that, the missiles will be able to slightly alter their course in flight.
Tanks a Lot, by mice, is one of my favourite entries so far in the SHMUP-DEV Competition 2k7 Round 2. mice has a video up on YouTube now, great looking stuff. He’s using Java and LWJGL as well. Somehow he’s able to make the combination much better looking than I can
Burn the Trash! is described by cactus as “what might be the ugliest shoot ‘em up ever made.” Regardless, I’ve played an early release and once again cactus provides us with a quirky game that’s a lot of fun. It’ll probably get released tonight.
Oh yeah, ‘Z‘ shoots your flames, and ‘X‘ seems to release an accelerant that really dishes out some destruction. Just don’t overheat.
Update: It’s available now for download, here. A wall of fame is here, or shame in my case.
