June Notables

Posted in everything, games, must have, shmups at 9:28 pm by the2bears

Most of June seemed to be dominated by various updates from the SHMUP-DEV Competition 2k7 Round 2, but a few non-related games stood out. I liked B29 Assault because of the unique feature that has you fly up the screen for the first half of a level, and back down for the second half. Cactus gave us another fun game in Fractal Fighter, with a simple idea once again nicely executed. Finally, I really liked the visual style of Euphonics.

Crayon Physics: Editor

Posted in everything, games, news, opensource, rapid prototyping at 10:02 am by the2bears

Petri has released a level editor for Crayon Physics (original post). Petri says he’s being “pressured by Linux users to release the source code.” I’m curious, are the Windows users demanding it crash their system? ;) Seriously, though, while an open source project might be the best thing for further development of Crayon Physics, I hope the tech hippies are being polite. It’s really Petri’s decision. I say this as someone who loves and believes in open source, by the way.

Kairos has a video of Varia up now. Now this is a boss fight :) See also Kairuga, Kairos‘ excellent homage to Ikaruga.

Of Rumours and Tumiki Fighters

Posted in everything, games, news at 9:44 am by the2bears

Oddbob has an excellent comment in this post, with some well-thought words on the recent Tumiki Fighters announcement.

He’s quite right, that while Mr. Cho is very well known to “us”, he may be relatively unknown to the general gaming community. Given that there is only one press release so far, it does seem silly to prematurely pass judgement on what might or might not have happened. It certainly seems likely that Majesco will credit him properly, in the proper manner.

But, more importantly, this is really Mr. Cho‘s business and none of ours. Hopefully he’s not been embarrassed by the attention. I apologize for helping to contribute to that.

So let’s just wait and see, and cross our fingers that the game isn’t completely messed up in the conversion.

Update: Mr. Cho has a post up on his blog now, here. Google translates:

Blast Works

* Majesco Entertainment Announces `Blast Works’ for the Wii Console link

It is like press release comes out of Majesco. Before the port it is possible to Wii to do TUMIKI Fighters applying from Majesco, and Budcat there being the inquiry which you say, because it is the BSD license, but the reason which is the details which how the [te] answer freely scared, the [tsu] [po] where the goal which release is done at last is in sight it is.

There’s some nuance here I’m sure I’m missing due to the translation. Here’s some info on the BSD license for those not familiar with it. It’s a very open license.

Update: pizelizr provides a better translation in the comments. Thanks!

Tumiki Fighters Update

Posted in everything, games, news, shmups at 7:10 pm by the2bears

It’s official now that Tumiki Fighters is headed to the Wii, though it’s been renamed Blast Works. I agree, though, with Siliconera:

One thing odd about Majesco’s announcement is they don’t acknowledge the source of the game at all. There is no mention of Tumiki Fighters in the press release or Kenta Cho, the original creator. Is Majesco trying to hide the original game because you can download and play it now?

What’s up with that? Sort of makes me think of, oh, I don’t know, maybe a big GFY to Majesco. To me, it’s a matter of respect. If you like the game well enough to publish a version for the Wii, wouldn’t a nod to the game’s designer and developer, Kenta Cho, be appropriate?

I’ll buy the game, but only if I can be sure that Mr. Cho is getting a percentage of my money. Original review.
