Moo at the Moon

Moo at the Moon is the 7th of Petri Purho’s monthly experimental games. Done in a mere 3 days, Moo at the Moon is a one button game, namely your left mouse button. Press it down and your cow becomes attracted to the nearest star. “Swing” yourself up using the orbital mechanics of the game, to go higher and higher until you reach the moon. Time is your only measure of success.

The game is certainly simpler than some of his recent efforts, it would be interesting to hear about how the one button requirement affected the design process. Simpler yes, but there is still enough gameplay here in figuring out how to use the mechanics, how to adjust, and how to get a bigger slingshot effect.

As usual, the graphics and music are among the games strong points. It’s cool to see the sky growing darker the higher your cow jumps. Petri is to be commended for maintaining his schedule and quality.

This has become a tradition :) So thanks again for blogging out a game of mine.

The one button design really turned out to be a saver. I tested the game with “the point with mouse cursor and click” controls, but they actually made the game a bit harder to play. Also there’s one tactic (gliding, might be a proper term) that’s only possible to do with the one button controls. You’d easily think that the one button design restricts the controls and makes the game harder, but actually in this game it makes the game easier and adds another layer of gameplay on to it.

P.S. I sent you an email about the whole GDC thing.
