Space Renegades: The Series

Congratulations to United Mind Games on the release of Space Renegades: The Series. The game had been delayed a few months, but I think the wait was worth it and to the benefit of the game. For the purposes of this post, I am discussing Space Renegades 2: Ultimatum, one of two games included but the only one in the demo version.

I reviewed an earlier copy in August, and I’m happy to report that all my ideas were incorporated. Kidding of course, but my early reservations with the game have for the most part been addressed, and the game is a lot more fun and playable for it.

The game itself incorporates different styles of levels. The first level is a little like Space Invaders, while the second level uses attack waves. I like this kind of variety. The game also utilizes the collection of money (for destroying enemies) and a store where you can purchase upgrades to your ship. The kinds of upgrades available include shields, different types of bombs, and options (or “helpers”).

The game also comes complete with a storyline, though if I’m being honest I’ll admit to skipping through. I do this with just about any game, and I’m probably missing some good lines. But still, it’s a nice feature, setting the premise for selecting which of two ships you will play as and more. It all adds the the retro feel, highlighted by some nice pixel graphics and a good soundtrack.

One of my early complaints regarded a tendency to get hit with unfair attacks, shots that moved to fast with no warning that were impossible to dodge. This has been balanced very nicely in the release version. Just watch out on the second level where ships will suddenly come up from behind.

All in all, though, I like the game this has turned into. It’s not as intense as some, but instead provides a more relaxed experience and succeeds in provoking that retro feeling. The price is hard to beat, $8, just in time for Christmas.
